Solar power


Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.[1] Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. The 354 MW SEGS CSP installation is the largest solar power plant in the world, located in the Mojave Desert of California. Other large CSP plants include the Solnova Solar Power Station (150 MW) and the Andasol solar power station (150 MW), both in Spain. The over 200 MW Agua Caliente Solar Project in the United States, and the 214 MW Charanka Solar Park in India, are the world’s largest photovoltaic plants. The early development of solar technologies starting in the 1860s was driven by an expectation that coal would soon become scarce. However, development of solar technologies stagnated in the early 20th century in the face of the increasing availability, economy, and utility of coal and petroleum.[17] In 1974 it was estimated that only six private homes in all of North America were entirely heated or cooled by functional solar power systems.[18] The 1973 oil embargo and 1979 energy crisis caused a reorganization of energy policies around the world and brought renewed attention to developing solar technologies.[19][20] Deployment strategies focused on incentive programs such as the Federal Photovoltaic Utilization Program in the US and the Sunshine Program in Japan. Other efforts included the formation of
research facilities in the US (SERI, now NREL),

 Japan (NEDO), and Germany (Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE).[21] Between 1970 and 1983 photovoltaic installations grew rapidly, but falling oil prices in the early 1980s moderated the growth of PV from 1984 to 1996. Since 1997, PV development has accelerated due to supply issues with oil and natural gas, global warming concerns, and the improving economic position of PV relative to other energy technologies.[22] Photovoltaic production growth has averaged 40% per year since 2000 and installed capacity reached 39.8 GW at the end of 2010,[23] of them 17.4 GW in Germany. As of October 2011, the largest photovoltaic (PV) power plants in the world are the Sarnia Photovoltaic Power Plant (Canada, 97 MW), Montalto di Castro Photovoltaic Power Station (Italy, 84.2 MW) and Finsterwalde Solar Park (Germany, 80.7 MW).[24] There are also many large plants under construction. The Desert Sunlight Solar Farm is a 550 MW solar power plant under construction in Riverside County, California, that will use thin-film solar photovoltaic modules made by First Solar.[25] The Topaz Solar Farm is a 550 MW photovoltaic power plant, being built in San Luis Obispo County, California.[26] The Blythe Solar Power Project is a 500 MW photovoltaic station under construction in Riverside County, California. The Agua Caliente Solar Project is a 290 megawatt photovoltaic solar generating facility being built in Yuma County, Arizona. The California Valley Solar Ranch (CVSR) is a 250 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power plant, which is being built by SunPower in the Carrizo Plain, northeast of California Valley.[27] The 230 MW Antelope Valley Solar Ranch is a First Solar photovoltaic project which is under construction in the Antelope Valley area of the Western Mojave Desert, and due to be completed in 2013.[28]

Using solar panels instead of relying on an electrical grid can save homeowners and businesses money over the long term. Although solar panels are often expensive to purchase and install, they are cheap to maintain, meaning that owners have to pay little or nothing to draw electricity from them. By contrast, those who draw power from an electrical grid generally pay a utility company month after month, based on the amount of power used. Calculating the exact savings received from solar panels depends on a number of factors.

      Multiply your average monthly electricity bill by the expected life of your solar panels. This number represents how much you would pay for electricity if you did not purchase the solar panels. Most solar panel manufacturers will provide an estimate of how long their products will last, which you should calculate in months. To get an accurate estimate of your average monthly electricity, take the numerical average of a full year's worth of bills to account for energy use in both warm and cold weather.

      Subtract from this number the cost of purchasing and installing the solar panels. Although some people choose to install solar panels themselves, most individuals without technical experience choose to hire a professional for the process. In nearly all cases, this number will be smaller than the number calculated in Step 1.

      Subtract the expected lifetime cost of maintaining the solar panels. This can be a tricky number to calculate since it's difficult to estimate the repair and maintenance that the panels will require accurately, as well as the cost of these procedures. Try to gather as much information from the manufacturer as you can about what kind of upkeep can be expected. The number you calculate in this step represents your total savings on solar panels before tax credits.
    • 4
      Add any tax credits that the state or federal government awards for the installation of solar panels. uring winter months, gas bills usually rise. One way to keep the gas bill cheap is to install solar heating panels. While they are not without a few disadvantages (mainly the cost of the hardware itself), there are many advantages to installing solar panels on your home. Solar panels harness the energy of the sun's radiation to power man-made devices or spaces.

History

  • Solar energy didn't become viable until the 1970s. But even then, middle-class people didn't really have the ability to install their own solar panels on their house. As solar energy became more popular each decade, it became more common to see solar panels on anybody's roof. Over the past decade, the "green movement" has provided an even greater push for the advancement of solar energy.

Types

  • Some solar panels are very expensive, and cannot be homemade. These are usually used for electricity, but can be used for heating as well.
    Homemade solar heating panels can be created simply for the purpose of heating a space, and they are not nearly as expensive as the kind that are used for electricity. It's a big project to make one by yourself, but you'll cut down on heating costs if you put the initial time in.

Effects

  • The main intended effect of a solar heating panel is to adequately heat a home or space. That is the immediate positive effect of solar hearing panels. Their other advantage is environmental. Because solar heating panels do not require natural gas but only the power of the sun, they don't use up limited resources.
    The main disadvantage of solar heating panels is a lack of convenience. If something goes wrong with a panel, there aren't large companies that drive around in trucks just for the sake of fixing problems. If your solar power breaks, it's up to you to fix it.

Benefits

  • The benefit of installing solar panels is both economic and environmental. After initial installation (which will probably cost as much as a year's worth of gas bills), your gas bill will be cut down dramatically. Air pollution and greenhouse gases will not be emitted in large quantities when you use solar heating panels. This will help keep the planet healthy.

Warning

  • There are two types of solar heating panels. One is designed for air heating, and another for water heating. If you want both your air and water heated by solar panels, you will need two different panels.
    Maintenance will be necessary when you use solar panels, usually eight to 16 hours. Upkeep of solar heating panels requires cleaning and damage repairs.
    If it's not particularly sunny, you probably won't get much energy from your panels. This is a disadvantage to solar panels, but if you have a backup gas line, you can use it for those cloudy days that deny you the power of the sun.

If your utility bills were high last winter, you may be able to lower them this year by making some smart alterations to your home now. Being energy efficient doesn’t have to cost a lot of money—it’s possible to make a big difference for very little outlay.

Insulate for the Greatest Savings

A sure-fire way to lower your heating bills is to improve the insulation in your property. Whether it’s the attic, walls or pipes, proper insulation makes a difference.

Insulate the attic. You can save heating costs by laying a fibreglass insulation blanket over the joists or filling the spaces between joists with loose-fill granules. Since up to 25% of your home’s heat is lost through the roof, you should recoup the cost within a few years.

Check existing insulation.
 Older houses often have only a thin layer of insulation. Ideally, it should be at least 20 cm (8 in.) deep. Top it up by 10–15 cm (4–6 in.) and you could be more comfortable and save money on heating costs.

Insulate the pipes. Insulate hot-water pipes with electric heat tape or flexible foam tubing, which you can buy from a plumbers’ supply or DIY store. You could save more than just the cost of lost heat—proper insulation helps to stop pipes freezing and bursting in winter.

Insulate the hot-water tank. Put an 8 cm (3 in.) thick insulating jacket around your hot-water tank to reduce heat loss by up to 75%. Check the owner’s manual to make sure a blanket is recommended for your model.

These days you can hardly turn on the TV without hearing something about how badly the economy is doing. So here a great idea that will help you save money and the environment … and maybe help you loss a few pounds.
I’m talking about switching from a Gas Powered lawn mower to a Push Reel Mower.
I’ve made a list of pro’s and con’s, for both the Gas Mower and the Reel Mower to help you decide if switching to a Reel Mower is right for you. Let’s start with the typical Gas Mower which most people own.
Gas Powered Lawn Mower
Pros:
- Cuts everything evenly including, grass, weeds, vines etc.
- Great for large lawns, makes it easy to push for long periods of time.
Cons:
- Creates air pollution that’s bad for the environment.
- Emits high levels of carbon monoxide and other toxins that are bad for your health
- Noisy
- Uses gas, which costs you money!!
- If you don’t already own one, there expensive. And if you do, they cost a lot to repair if they break down.
Man Powered Push Reel Mower:
Pros:
- Emits no pollution.
- Very Quiet
- Inexpensive. No cost wasted on gas!!
- Better for the lawn. If used regularly the scissor-like cut of the reel mower is actually healthier for your lawn.
- It better for your health. Not only are you pushing the reel mower for exercise, you won’t be inhaling toxic fumes like you were with the gas powered mower.
Cons:
- Has trouble cutting tall grass and weeds.
- Not good for large lawns, or pushing for long periods of time.
Push Reel Mowers may not be the best choice for everyone. It really depends on the size of your lawn and the type of grass you have. In this video I’m going to give you a quick tour of my backyard and show you my beautiful vegetable garden. If you already have a garden that’s fantastic, if you don’t it’s not too late to plant something this year.http://auditorlink.blogspot.in/
For some people it may seem like too much work, but I love getting my hands dirty and spending time with my family. My kids love learning about natures and helping out. Plus, I can’t tell you have much money we save on produce each year.
Now as you can see, I have a really big garden. Now you don’t need a garden this big to see some benefits. I mean if I could send you one of my mouth watering tomatoes when they’re ready, you’d never go back to the unripe, tasteless grocery store fruits and vegetables. On top of great tasting produce, growing your own food means that you’re helping the planet too. Most food we get today is grown very far away. Many times it comes from another country. This transportation requires huge amounts of fossil fuels which heavily pollutes the environment.
One more thing, if you do plan to grow a garden, I highly recommend planting an organic garden. Here are a few reasons why:
• You won’t have to handle dangerous chemicals that are harmful to your health
• Organically grown foods taste much better
• Organically grown foods are much higher in nutrients
• They’re not genetically modified, who really knows what this does to our food
• Using natural methods is much better for the environment

If you’re like me, you have a dozen or so bills you have to pay each and every month. But have you ever wondered how much paper and energy is wasted printing and mailing those bills?
When I first heard this number I was shocked. Over 63 Billion bills were mailed out in 2008 in the United States alone. Each one of these was printed, folded, stuffed into an envelope, delivered to the post office, then delivered to your home and ultimately, thrown in the garbage. Think of all the wasted electricity, gas and natural resources used just to send you your bill.
Well if you haven’t already been using it, I want to welcome you to the world of e-billing. E-bills work the same as regular bills except instead of getting them in the mail, you conveniently get them delivered to your computer as an email. Now I know some of you are already doing this, so to you I say congratulations. To everyone else, it’s simple to switch and here’s how.
1. Make a list of all the bills that you pay monthly. A simple way to do this is to collect your bills for a few months and mark down the ones you still receive by mail.
2. Next call each company that is sending you bills and ask them if they offer electronic billing. If they don’t, encourage them to start doing so. Not only will they help save the environment, they’ll be saving money too. While you’re on the phone with them, ask them what information you’ll need to make the payment electronically through your bank.
3. Lastly, contact you bank and ask them to setup your bill payment in your bank account so you won’t have to re-enter the information each and every month.
And that’s it. And once you’re setup, you’ll just have to check your email for bills and pay them online. Not only are you saving the environment, but your also saving time by not having to travel to the bank to pay your bills.
Now a lot of people ask me if this is safe. I was a little worried when I first got started too, but rest assured many banks offer great protection in the event something was to go wrong. I personally think it’s a lot safer. We’ve all heard stories of identity theft. These criminals actually go through people’s garbage to find bills to steal your personal information. By using eBills, you won’t have to worry about this anymore. Try switching to online billing and let me know what you think in the blog section.

Have you ever wondered how much water is being wasted in your home? Gallons of water are being poured down the drain daily, just by taking a shower, running the faucet and watering the lawn. Well, today I’m going to give you some water saving tips to help reduce the water use in your home.
1. Turn off your taps:
Turning water taps off while doing daily chores helps save wasted water. For example:
• Brushing your teeth without the water running can save 25 gallons a month.
• When washing your hands, turn off the tap until you’re lathered up and ready to rinse.
• Same with shaving, turning the water off until you need to rinse, this can save another 300 gallons a month.
• If you wash dishes by hand, fill one sink with soapy water and wait until all dishes have been scrubbed and soaped, then rinse all at the same time.
2. Save used water:
Don’t dump used water down the drain, save it. Use a pan to wash your fruits and vegetable instead of washing them under running water. Save the water and use it to water your household plants or garden. Same with the water from your cooked vegetables, give the nutrients to your plants, or save it for a nutritious soup for yourself.
3. Reduce water use on your lawn:
Most water waste is from unattended sprinklers or water systems on your lawn. Always make sure you adjust your sprinklers so only your lawn is getting watered, not the sidewalk, driveway or street. Put your outdoor sprinklers on a timer, or set your kitchen timer while you are inside, so you won’t forget the sprinklers are on. Also before watering, use a spade or trowel to check the root of your lawn or garden for moisture. If there is still moisture two inches under the soil surface, you don’t need to water.
4. Install low flow water fixtures:
The average US family uses 127,000 gallons of water a year; by switching to low flow fixtures around your home you can drastically reduce that number. In past videos, I’ve shown you how to install a low flow showerhead, but think of all the other taps in your home.

Today I want show you what you can do to make your refrigerator run more efficiently.
Your refrigerator is usually one of the largest energy users in your home as it’s constantly working to keep your food cool and at the right temperature. Now, here are a few simple tips you can do at home to help reduce the amount of energy your refrigerator uses.
Tips:
1. Locate your refrigerators coils which are located at the back of the fridge or at the bottom behind the kick plate. Once a month, vacuum all the dust off these coils to make sure they run as efficient as possible.
2. Allow frozen food to thaw out in the fridge. It’s safe to defrost meats this way and the frozen food helps keep the fridge cool so it runs less.
3. Before placing leftovers in the fridge, make sure they cool down to room temperature. Hot food makes your fridge work twice as hard as it needs to.
4. Check the door seals on your fridge with a simple test. Close the door on a $1 bill. The seal should hold the bill tightly in place. If the bill is easily removed, you should contact the manufacturer and replace the seal.
Whether or not you have an energy star rated fridge, these tips will help you save money. Remember with everything I share, make sure to tell your friends and family so they can see the savings too.

As much as people try to reduce their waste, our landfills are still piling up. So I thought I’d share a few ideas to help you reduce your waste even more.

1. Reuse Old Clothes:
Instead of throwing out old clothes, use them as cleaning rags. This limits the amount of paper towels you use, and they can be used over and over again, by simply tossing them in the wash. If the clothes are still in good condition, donate them to the Goodwill or Salvation Army instead. Or call up your local animal shelter; some may take your old towels and sweaters as bedding for rescued animals. I’ve also heard of textile recycle plants that take old clothes and recycle them into new fabric, insulation or even paper.
2. Limit Bottled Water Use:
It takes about 17 million barrels of oil to create the plastic we use for water bottles each year in the US. That’s a huge amount of waste. Instead of bottled water, use a water cooler in your home. Better yet, use a water crock so you’re not wasting electricity.
3. Use Reusable Lunch containers:
Switch out the old brown paper bag for a reusable lunch bag. Try and use one that’s washer or dishwasher safe, so it’s easy to keep it clean. Also, the amount of plastic bags we use to pack our snacks and lunch in, are not only bad on the environment but also harm animals when we throw them away. Instead, try using washable plastic containers (like Tupperware or Pyrex) for your lunch.
4. Lastly, Use Reusable Shopping Bag:
Did you know that over, 1 billion plastic grocery bags are used in the U.S. each year? By switching to a cloth grocery bag you can limit the amount of wasted plastic. Also, if you only have a few groceries say NO to plastic bags and just carry them by hand.

Dimmer Switch


Dimmer Switch

Today I’m going to show you how to use dimmer switches to lower your power bill. Most people think of dimmer switches as a way to set the mood for a room, but dimming the light also reduces the power draw and extends the life of your bulbs.

Installation is pretty easy, but before we start, here are a few things to know:
• Make sure the bulbs you have are compatible with dimmer switches.
• Before you buy a dimmer, find out how the existing switch is wired. Most of the time you’ll need a 2-way switch, but sometimes you’ll need a 3-way switch. If you’re unfamiliar with this terminology, you may want to consider professional installation.
There are many different dimmer switches on the market. You don’t need a fancy dimmer to save electricity, but choose the one that fits your needs. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions and take all safety precautions. Again, if you are not comfortable working with electricity, please contact a certified electrician.
Here are some tools we will need to get started:
1. Screwdriver
2. Wire strippers
3. Electrical tape
4. Wire nuts
5. Circuit tester
1. First, locate your electrical panel and turn off the breaker to that switch. If you’re not sure which breaker it is, turn off the main breaker.
2. Remove the face plate for the light switch.
3. Check the circuit with the tester to insure the power is off.
4. Disconnect the old switch and make note on how it was connected.
5. Determine if you need to strip the wires for proper connection.
6. Connect the wires to the dimmer switch.
7. If your dimmer switch has lead wires connect them to the house wires with wire nuts.
8. Connect the ground wires with wire nuts.
9. Tuck the wires into the circuit box and attach plate with screws.
10. Turn on breaker from the electrical panel and test.
11. If the light does not work, turn breaker off and check connections.
Now that you have a dimmer switch, you can adjust the brightness of the lights. To save power, set you lights to 50-75% brightness or less. This will help save you money, extend the life of the bulb, and give the room a nice relaxed feeling.
