I've seen numerous commentaries on the energy implications of President Obama's narrow, 51%/49%  victory. One of the most intriguing of these, from Reuters, concerned the prospects for exporting a portion of the growing output of natural gas produced from US shale deposits.  This issue doesn't only affect gas drillers and their residential and industrial customers, but also developers of renewable energy projects, because of the way that gas and renewables compete in electricity markets.  As much as the President's reelection, the failure of Republicans to capture control of the US Senate might turn out to be a key factor in determining the fate of potential gas exports, and by extension the environment within which renewables like wind and solar power must compete.

A variety of energy issues has been in limbo for months, pending the outcome of Tuesday's election.  That includes approval of the Keystone XL crude oil pipeline from Canada, which might have gotten a favorable nudge as a result of Senate wins by pro-pipeline Democrats in North Dakota and Montana.  Environmentalists are committed toblocking the pipeline, so the President must soon choose which part of his winning coalition he will disappoint.  By comparison, the question of natural gas exports has received much less attention in the media, although it's been discussed extensively within energy and manufacturing circles.  The likely incoming chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Ron Wyden (D-OR), appears to have strong views on the subject.    

If Senator Wyden does replace the outgoing chairman, Senator Bingaman (D-NM), as expected, this would represent a shift in constituencies from a state with significant oiland gas production to one with essentially none.  Senator Wyden thus brings mainly an end-user perspective to his Energy and Natural Resources role, and from that standpoint his concern about the potential price impact of gas exports, whether in the form of LNG or otherwise, is understandable, although I would argue it is also short-sighted and potentially detrimental to renewable energy, which he strongly supports.

On the surface, restrictions on the export of US gas should result in lower domestic natural gas prices than if large quantities of gas were shipped offshore.  After all, low US natural gas prices, compared to those in Europe and Asia, are the main driver behind the desire to build export facilities, such as the Sabine Pass project of Cheniere Energy.  Natural gas is cheaper in the US than elsewhere for several reasons, including the high and growing output from shale gas resources, as well as the epic disconnect between the natural gas price and crude oil prices, which are the basis for most international LNG contracts. US gas at the wellhead is currently trading for the oil equivalent of $21 per barrel, compared to UK Brent Crude at $107 per barrel.  The extent to which exports might increase domestic prices is a matter of much speculation and study, and I wouldn't venture a guess.  However, we can't just look at demand in gauging the impact of export restrictions.

The efficacy of holding down US prices by keeping more gas here also depends on the response of producers.  If legislators or regulators turn the US gas market into a capped bottle, why would producers be content to supply steadily increasing quantities of gas at prices that don't provide them an attractive return?  To some degree the low prices we've seen this year were the result of the combination of a weak economy and a supply glut created by contractual commitments on the part of drillers to develop gas leases at a specified pace.  My understanding is that most such commitments have lapsed, and that a significant proportion of current gas supply is coming from wells that depend on the economics of their liquids output (crude oil and gas liquids), with the associated natural gas effectively a byproduct.  It's not clear how rapidly gas production can continue to grow without natural gas prices that make gas-only wells economically attractive.  So a US gas market with no export outlets would likely produce less gas in the long run, and that would constrain opportunities to use our abundant gas resources to support new industries, displace oil from transportation, and further reduce the use of coal in power generation.

Moreover, keeping a lid on the US gas market would compound the obstacles for renewable sources of electricity.  Wind power developers and turbine manufacturers now face the expiration of the Wind Production Tax Credit (PTC).  Even if it is extended, the output of wind farms competes with the output of gas turbines, while the grid relies on gas-fired power to provide a back-up for the intermittent output of wind and solar power.  The cheaper the gas, the tougher it will be for renewables to make a profit. Market competition with gas will become an even bigger issue for renewables as they expand beyond the capacity of a cash-strapped federal government to continue to subsidize them.  The one-year extension of the PTC under consideration could cost as much as $12 billion, an annual price tag that would only grow as renewables scale up--as they must if they are going to matter.

Navigating the complexities of allowing or restricting natural gas exports, and balancing the various constituencies involved, could provide an early test of the administration's commitment to an all-of-the-above energy strategy.  That's because "all of the above"--if not merely a slogan--implies more than just producing energy from a variety of sources.  It also entails competition among all these sources within a market in which some sectors of demand are declining, others growing, and new ones--including exports--are appearing all the time.  Pushing back on one part of this market will have large consequences in other parts, and regulators could soon be overwhelmed by unintended consequences.

The total capacity of ESG systems worldwide will reach almost 56,000 megawatts by 2022, the study said.
Advances in next-generation pumped storage, compressed air energy storage, and advanced batteries have multiplied the technology options available for energy storage on the grid (ESG), while, at the same time, the applications for ESG are also increasing.
 Rapidly changing energy mixes and increasingly volatile load profiles will challenge grid operators to deliver reliable and secure electricity, encouraging demand for ESG over the next decade, the report said.
"One of the key challenges for energy storage will be to deliver cost-effective solutions for these grid stability issues," said research analyst Anissa Dehamna. "Market structures still must catch up with the market to acknowledge the value of energy storage to grid operators and power consumers. At the same time, the industry must solve issues around business models and the supply chain in order to successfully scale up and fully commercialize these emerging technologies."
A key business model shift in the ESG market is increasing specialization, according to the report. Specifically, a significant number of recent strategic decisions and partnerships reflect a narrower market focus on the part of technology vendors.
Instead of targeting many different markets and countries, more and more vendors are targeting their sales efforts on one or two markets or applications, and are repositioning themselves in the energy storage supply chain, the report "Energy Storage on the Grid" said.

Alternative energy

 The term "alternative" presupposes a set of undesirable energy technologies against which "alternative energies" are contrasted. As such, the list of energy technologies excluded is an indicator of which problems the alternative technologies are intended to address. Controversies regarding dominant sources of energy and their alternatives have a long history. The nature of what was regarded alternative energy sources has changed considerably over time, and today, because of the variety of energy choices and differing goals of their advocates, defining some energy types as "alternative" is highly controversial. In a general sense in contemporary society, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered to be the major contributing factor of global warming according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Sometimes, this less comprehensive meaning of "alternative energy" excludes nuclear energy (e.g. as defined in the Michigan Next Energy Authority Act of 2002).[2] 
Historians of economies have studied the key transitions to alternative energies and regard the transitions as pivotal in bringing about significant economic change.[9][10][11] Prior to the shift to an alternative energy, supplies of the dominant energy type became erratic, accompanied by rapid increases in energy prices. By the end of 2008 there were 35,000 filling stations throughout Brazil with at least one ethanol pump.[17] Cellulosic ethanol can be produced from a diverse array of feedstocks, and involves the use of the whole crop. This new approach should increase yields and reduce the carbon footprint because the amount of energy-intensive fertilizers and fungicides will remain the same, for a higher output of usable material.[18][19] As of 2008, there are nine commercial cellulosic ethanol plants which are either operating, or under construction, in the United States.[20] Second-generation biofuels technologies are able to manufacture biofuels from inedible biomass and could hence prevent conversion of food into fuel." [21] As of July 2010, there is one commercial second-generation (2G) ethanol plant Inbicon Biomass Refinery, which is operating in Denmark.[22]

Heat Pumps
  • Air-Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)
ASHPs, often used in moderate climates, use the difference between outdoor and indoor air temperatures to cool and heat your home. For example, they work in cold weather because the air is warmer than the refrigerant in the system and causes it to boil into a gas. This gas is then compressed which drives the temperature up to 120 degrees or more. This hot gas transfers heat to your home. High efficiency ASHPs use less energy than conventional models. They also come with higher HSPF ratings. HSPF, the Heating and Seasonal Performance Factor, measures the heating efficiency of heat pumps.
  • Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHPs)
By using stable temperature conditions in the ground, GHPs cool and heat your home. In addition to providing much lower energy bills, high efficiency GHPs are quieter and include water-heating capabilities. Although initially expensive, they quickly pay back the homeowner with significant cost savings. GHPs are most often installed in new homes and require a duct system.

New Delhi: Barely a week after it raised $500 million through foreign currency bonds, NTPC is planning to revisit overseas markets for more funds. The country’s largest power producer may raise another $700 million between January and June 2013, say sources familiar with the development.
The proposed issuance will be NTPC’s fourth offering under its $2-billion medium-term-note (MTN) programme, launched in 2006. “We are going to raise money soon. We will continue to tap overseas markets,” said Arup Roy Choudhury, chairman and managing director, without elaborating on the details.
Higher domestic borrowing costs and the recent reduction in withholding tax rate on infrastructure companies’ external commercial borrowings (ECB) are encouraging firms to scout overseas markets for funds.

NTPC became the first company to benefit from lower withholding tax when it raised funds last week through dollar-denominated senior unsecured 10-year bonds. The offer was subscribed eight times, which allowed the firm to price the bond at 305 basis points above the US Treasury (UST), cheaper than its initial guidance of 325 basis points above the UST.
The bond had a coupon at 4.75 per cent, the lowest coupon ever achieved by the company for its international bonds.
“The high withholding tax rate was making issuances very expensive; the reduction (in withholding tax rate) is a welcome change, although it has been restricted to only those having the status of infrastructure companies. The reduction in the effective rate of withholding tax from 26.7 per cent to 5.25 per cent will encourage a number of infrastructure companies to exploit fund raising opportunities overseas,” said Syed Zafar, managing director for capital markets and treasury solutions at Deutsche Bank in India.
The foreign lender was one of the merchant bankers to NTPC’s bond issue in September 2012. “A number of public sector companies that have necessary investment grades have expressed interest to raise funds from the overseas markets, but we will also get to see high yield issuers out of India accessing the offshore bond market,” said Zafar.
NTPC plans to use the funds in financing their capital expenditure. “During the 12th Five Year Plan period, our total capital expenditure plan is Rs 2.19 lakh crore. Out of this, Rs 1.5 lakh crore will be raised from the markets. Hence, we need to approach overseas investors to meet our funding requirements,” said NTPC’s Choudhury.
According to a senior official at NTPC, currently 18 projects with 15,000 Mw capacity are under construction and the money will be used to finance these ventures.
However, sources said a sharp decrease in domestic lending rates in coming months may persuade NTPC to delay its proposed overseas bond issue by a few months. “It will depend on whether the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decides to cut rate in October.
If (domestic) lending rates come down sharply, then the issue may happen in the second half of the next calendar year,” said a source.

Packing your own meals is a lot healthier since most restaurants use heavily processed foods and deep fry almost everything. Instead make yourself a healthy meal. I like to take my leftovers to work so they don’t go to waste.

Also eating out is expensive. Have you ever really considered how much you spend on eating out at lunch? On average people spend about $140 a month! That’s almost $1700 a year.
Lastly packing your own meal helps the planet. Helps reduce food and packing waste. Like I said before, I pack my leftovers that would usually end up going bad and would otherwise be thrown out. Also I like to use glass containers that can be washed and a lunch bag that can be reused.

Now most people drive to restaurants so eating out will also cut down on fossil fuel use. Any way you slice it packing a healthy lunch from home is more nutritious, it’s cheaper and better for the environment. I hope you liked this video.

It’s a known fact that the production of printed material requires a significant amount of energy, water and paper in order to end up with a useable product.
With the popularity of tablets and eBook readers we now have a greener choice. Digital book readers can be used over and over and over again and they don’t use that much electricity. In fact eBook readers, last as long as one full month on a single charge!
Almost all major newspapers and magazines are available electronically. Many are predicting that eBooks will eventually replace traditional paper books all together in the near future. And in terms of convenience eBooks can’t be beat. You can quickly and easily download them and you can carry hundreds of titles with you wherever you go. Now whenever you read you can feel happy that you are contributing to a greener earth.

TIP – Shed Some Light On The Subject: Let the sun in by pulling back the blinds if it is dark inside your home. People are often surprised to find that this actually does a better job of lighting their rooms, even when the sun is not on the same side of the house! If privacy is an issue, go shopping for sheer blinds… They will allow an optimum amount of natural lighting in, while allowing you to see out right through them!

TIP – Burn Energy Without Burning Money: In the evenings, opt for energy efficient bulbs instead of conventional ones: new proposed laws are soon to make these older style bulbs illegal for sale in most areas, anyhow. Even though environmentally friendly bulbs can be almost twice as expensive, they last up to six times as long, so you’ll hardly ever have to replace them!
The Department of Energy recently estimated that for every commonly-used household lightbulb that was replaced by an energy-efficient equivalent, annual savings would amount to $22 per bulb!

Indoor lighting is usually accomplished using light fixtures, and is a key part ofinterior design. Lighting can also be an intrinsic component of landscape projects.
