Energy storage on the grid to surpass $30 billion in annual market value by 2022 - Pike Research

Energy storage on the grid to surpass $30 billion in annualAmerica

(source: austinenergy)
Greentech Lead America: The market for energy storage on the grid, starting from a very low base in 2012, will surpass $30 billion in annual value by 2022m according to recent report from Pike Research.
The total capacity of ESG systems worldwide will reach almost 56,000 megawatts by 2022, the study said.
Advances in next-generation pumped storage, compressed air energy storage, and advanced batteries have multiplied the technology options available for energy storage on the grid (ESG), while, at the same time, the applications for ESG are also increasing.
Rapidly changing energy mixes and increasingly volatile load profiles will challenge grid operators to deliver reliable and secure electricity, encouraging demand for ESG over the next decade, the report said.
"One of the key challenges for energy storage will be to deliver cost-effective solutions for these grid stability issues," said research analyst Anissa Dehamna. "Market structures still must catch up with the market to acknowledge the value of energy storage to grid operators and power consumers. At the same time, the industry must solve issues around business models and the supply chain in order to successfully scale up and fully commercialize these emerging technologies."
A key business model shift in the ESG market is increasing specialization, according to the report. Specifically, a significant number of recent strategic decisions and partnerships reflect a narrower market focus on the part of technology vendors.
Instead of targeting many different markets and countries, more and more vendors are targeting their sales efforts on one or two markets or applications, and are repositioning themselves in the energy storage supply chain, the report "Energy Storage on the Grid" said.

Alternative energy

The term "alternative" presupposes a set of undesirable energy technologies against which "alternative energies" are contrasted. As such, the list of energy technologies excluded is an indicator of which problems the alternative technologies are intended to address. Controversies regarding dominant sources of energy and their alternatives have a long history. The nature of what was regarded alternative energy sources has changed considerably over time, and today, because of the variety of energy choices and differing goals of their advocates, defining some energy types as "alternative" is highly controversial. In a general sense in contemporary society, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered to be the major contributing factor of global warming according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Sometimes, this less comprehensive meaning of "alternative energy" excludes nuclear energy (e.g. as defined in the Michigan Next Energy Authority Act of 2002).[2]
Historians of economies have studied the key transitions to alternative energies and regard the transitions as pivotal in bringing about significant economic change.[9][10][11] Prior to the shift to an alternative energy, supplies of the dominant energy type became erratic, accompanied by rapid increases in energy prices. [edit]Coal as an alternative to wood Historian Norman F. Cantor describes how in the late medieval period, coal was the new alternative fuel to save the society from overuse of the dominant fuel, wood: "Europeans had lived in the midst of vast forests throughout the earlier medieval centuries. After 1250 they became so skilled at deforestation that by 1500 AD they were running short of wood for heating and cooking... By 1500 Europe was on the edge of a fuel and nutritional disaster, [from] which it was saved in the sixteenth century only by the burning of soft coal and the cultivation of potatoes and maize. "[12] [edit]Petroleum as an alternative to whale oil Whale oil was the dominant form of lubrication and fuel for lamps in the early 19th century, but the depletion of the whale stocks by mid century caused whale oil prices to skyrocket setting the stage for the adoption of petroleum which was first commercialized in Pennsylvania in 1859.[13] [edit]Alcohol as an alternative to fossil fuels Main article: Ethanol fuel In 1917, Alexander Graham Bell advocated ethanol from corn, wheat and other foodstuffs as an alternative to coal and oil, stating that the world was in measurable distance of depleting these fuels. For Bell, the problem requiring an alternative was lack of renewability of orthodox energy sources.[14] Since the 1970s, Brazil has had an ethanol fuel program which has allowed the country to become the world's second largest producer of ethanol (after the United States) and the world's largest exporter.[15] Brazil’s ethanol fuel program uses modern equipment and cheap sugar cane as feedstock, and the residual cane-waste (bagasse) is used to process heat and power.[16] There are no longer light vehicles in Brazil running on pure gasoline. By the end of 2008 there were 35,000 filling stations throughout Brazil with at least one ethanol pump.[17] Cellulosic ethanol can be produced from a diverse array of feedstocks, and involves the use of the whole crop. This new approach should increase yields and reduce the carbon footprint because the amount of energy-intensive fertilizers and fungicides will remain the same, for a higher output of usable material.[18][19] As of 2008, there are nine commercial cellulosic ethanol plants which are either operating, or under construction, in the United States.[20] Second-generation biofuels technologies are able to manufacture biofuels from inedible biomass and could hence prevent conversion of food into fuel." [21] As of July 2010, there is one commercial second-generation (2G) ethanol plant Inbicon Biomass Refinery, which is operating in Denmark.[22]

Solar Energy Products

 Solar Energy Products

The developments in solar energy technology has led to the creation of a wide range of Solar Energy Products that run on renewable and clean energy provided by sunlight. Even though solar-power run products were considered to be novelty products in their earlier stages, today they are not only popular but also highly practical. from solar powered visors to outdoor lamps, the number and types of solar power products are increasing everyday.
Types of Solar-Powered Products
Heating your pool can significantly increase your energy bills. If you consider using it unheated, it will be unusable during the winters. When you want to keep the pool at suitable temperatures, and at the same time keep your energy bills low, it would be best to consider installing Solar Energy Products like pool heating discs
The solar discs float on the water absorbing sunlight and converting solar energy into heat energy to heat up water. To get best results, it is recommended that the discs cover a minimum of a third of the surface of area of the pool.
There are other Solar Energy Products that can prove to be important part of an emergency supply kit. Solar powered radios help you listen to news and other messages even when there is a natural disaster or power outage. Batteries charged by solar power can help run important electronics even when there is no power available.
Solar powered Lanterns and flashlights are essentials for your emergency kits. And, they are certainly of great help for backpackers and hikers who cannot take along heavy batteries, and have to spend days out in the open where there can be no other source of power except sunlight.
Outdoor lighting is another fast emerging range of Solar Energy Products. You can find fake candles, tiki torches and the usual looking lanterns, all powered by sunlight. While these products collect solar energy during daytime, they start glowing with the sun going down. There are two main benefits of installing solar-powered outdoor lightings. They cut down your energy bills, and they eliminate pollution by replacing the ordinary light bulbs.
Solar Panels
All the solar-powered products are not just accessories for your home. Solar panels generate sufficient amount of power to replace the conventional electricity system and power your entire home requirements. Solar panels are installed on the room and provide clean and renewable energy that significantly brings down your utility bills. When you start producing additional electricity using solar panels in your home, you can even sell the additional power to the grid.
Future of Solar-Powered Products
As per experts in the field of solar energy technology, the present solar-powered products are just in their beginning stages. The future application of the technology is believed to grow significantly. It is also estimated that solar energy technology in future will develop to a stage where an entire city can be run on solar power. And, presently, Solar Energy Products are being developed to reduce your dependence on traditional electricity so as to minimize your utility bills.

Heating & Cooling

Heating & Cooling

TIP – Buy A Programmable Thermostat: These are just awesome. I wish I’d invented them. They can so dramatically improve your home’s energy efficiency that they’ll probably be legally required in another decade. A programmable thermostat will save as much as 30 percent on controlling the climate of your home, whether you use a furnace, an air conditioner, or both at different times of the year.
If your home is well-insulated, you should see dramatic results. The best part about these devices is that you can set them to automatically adjust the temperature in the morning when everyone goes out, and have it begin to reaclimatize in the afternoon before people come home! At night it can be set to shut down again. And all this without you ever having to give it a second thought.
TIP – Caulk all windows: It’s a well-known fact that there are always leaks and gaps of varying sizes around every window frame. Actually, windows are without fail the biggest energy-losers when if comes to home heating and cooling.

The caulking around your window frames won’t last forever. And given how inexpensive the stuff is, you might as well dig it out, and replace it once a year in the spring. Reason being, elements like rain and snow can get into grooves that we can’t even see, expanding in the cold, and rotting the caulk from the inside’out. To avoid this, use a leading brand silicon caulk (which is weather-resistant) and apply evenly to ensure that you’ve achieved a good seal.
IEA Solar Heating & Cooling Implementing Agreement - Task 13 (Solar Low Energy Buildings) was an international effort organised by one of the International Energy Agency's Implementing Agreements to build several solar low-energy houses. This took place between 1989 and 1993(?). The Implementing Agreement for a Programme to Develop and Test Solar Heating and Cooling Systems is one of 40 research and development and deployment programmes, which are at the core of the IEA's International Energy Technology Co-operation Programme. The idea behind Task 13 was to push construction technology towards its limits to achieve the lowest possible total purchased energy consumption. Task 13 was part of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, to test the designs and techniques, and to monitor their performance.

Conserving Water

Conserving Water

TIP – Strategic Planting: Save flowers and plants that require a good supply of water for flatter ground. The earth in sloped terrain doesn’t do a great job of holding on to water, and this can leave you watering the foliage that you plant there far too often… and sometimes without even getting good results!
For added greenery in these areas, opt instead for cacti, moss, and other forms of groundcover that won’t place such high demands on your water bill. Adding plants of this kind to sloped terrain will also help prevent soil erosion over time!

TIP – Keep A Truly Green Lawn: Gone are the days in which we could dump as much water as we wanted onto our lawns, and combine it with chemical fertilizers to have a lawn so thick and green that it almost didn’t look natural. The hike in water prices in recent years alone forbids this, but an increasing number of municipalities are instituting bylaws that give people assigned days during which they can water their lawns… and fines if they do not comply! Let your lawn become a more natural green.

Shoreland Best Management Practices

Number 18 of 18 in the Series

What Are Shoreland BMPs?

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are actions you can take to reduce your impact on the environment. BMPs have been described for agriculture, forest management, and construction. This fact sheet describes BMPs you can adopt on your shoreland property to help protect and preserve water quality. In many cases, the best management for shorelands may be retaining the natural characteristics of your property.

Why Is Conserving Water Important?

Reducing our use of water will decrease water pollution, increase energy savings, and create more efficient use of our water resources. Too much water in an on-site sewage treatment system can flush untreated material through before organisms have a chance to break it down. If untreated material gets to the drainfield, the material can plug up the soil within the drainfield and shorten the life of the septic system. Sending too much water down the drain can also cause systems to "blow out," allowing untreated material to flow out onto the ground. If this occurs, the system needs to be dug up and repaired. Failing septic systems can:
  • contaminate drinking wells
  • cause health risks such as hepatitis or dysentery
  • cause chemical pollution from household cleaning products
  • contribute excess nutrients to ground water, lakes, or streams
Conserving water in rural areas will increase the life of existing septic systems. Conserving water within a municipal water system will reduce household expenses, increase treatment plant efficiency, and reduce the amount of electricity and chemicals needed to treat wastewater. In both situations, conserving water protects water quality through improved wastewater treatment.

How Much Water Do We Use?

A typical household of four uses 260 gallons of water each day. Much of this water is used in the bathroom. Toilets use 40% of the total, showers/baths and faucets use 35%. By contrast, 15% is used in the kitchen, and 10% for washing clothes.
