Alternative energy

 The term "alternative" presupposes a set of undesirable energy technologies against which "alternative energies" are contrasted. As such, the list of energy technologies excluded is an indicator of which problems the alternative technologies are intended to address. Controversies regarding dominant sources of energy and their alternatives have a long history. The nature of what was regarded alternative energy sources has changed considerably over time, and today, because of the variety of energy choices and differing goals of their advocates, defining some energy types as "alternative" is highly controversial. In a general sense in contemporary society, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered to be the major contributing factor of global warming according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Sometimes, this less comprehensive meaning of "alternative energy" excludes nuclear energy (e.g. as defined in the Michigan Next Energy Authority Act of 2002).[2] 
Historians of economies have studied the key transitions to alternative energies and regard the transitions as pivotal in bringing about significant economic change.[9][10][11] Prior to the shift to an alternative energy, supplies of the dominant energy type became erratic, accompanied by rapid increases in energy prices. Cantor describes how in the late medieval period, coal was the new alternative fuel to save the society from overuse of the dominant fuel, wood: "Europeans had lived in the midst of vast forests throughout the earlier medieval centuries. For Bell, the problem requiring an alternative was lack of renewability of orthodox energy sources.[14] Since the 1970s, Brazil has had an ethanol fuel program which has allowed the country to become the world's second largest producer of ethanol (after the United States) and the world's largest exporter.[15] Brazil’s ethanol fuel program uses modern equipment and cheap sugar cane as feedstock, and the residual cane-waste (bagasse) is used to process heat and power.[16] There are no longer light vehicles in Brazil running on pure gasoline. By the end of 2008 there were 35,000 filling stations throughout Brazil with at least one ethanol pump.[17] Cellulosic ethanol can be produced from a diverse array of feedstocks, and involves the use of the whole crop. This new approach should increase yields and reduce the carbon footprint because the amount of energy-intensive fertilizers and fungicides will remain the same, for a higher output of usable material.[18][19] As of 2008, there are nine commercial cellulosic ethanol plants which are either operating, or under construction, in the United States.[20] Second-generation biofuels technologies are able to manufacture biofuels from inedible biomass and could hence prevent conversion of food into fuel." [21] As of July 2010, there is one commercial second-generation (2G) ethanol plant Inbicon Biomass Refinery, which is operating in Denmark.[22]

As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling.  Through the WARMAdvantage Program, consumers are provided rebates when they purchase high efficiency ENERGY STAR® qualified natural gas home heating systems and/or water heaters.  As part of the program, you are able to receive rebates for the purchase of furnaces, furnaces with electronic commutated motor (ECM) or equivalent, boilers, and/or water heaters.  By purchasing these high efficiency heating products, you will save on energy bills and improve the comfort level of your home.
Furnaces

Furnaces are the most commonly used residential heating system in the United States, running most often on gas, but sometimes on fuel oil or electricity, and deliver their heat through a duct system.  One in 4 furnaces in U.S. homes today is more than 20 years old.  ENERGY STAR qualified furnaces use advanced technology to deliver higher efficiency than standard new furnaces available today.
Boilers
A boiler heats your home by burning gas or fuel oil to heat water or steam that circulates through radiators, baseboards, or radiant floor systems.  Boilers that have earned the ENERGY STAR have higher Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratings, which is a measure of heating equipment efficiency.

TIP – Buy A Device Timer For Your Pump: Depending on the materials used in the construction of your pool, you may be given different instructions on how long the pump needs to run. By putting it on a timer, you can customize the amount power it uses so that it uses no more than it needs. Also, you will be able to go out with confidence knowing that your pump will stop running when it whould whether you’ home or not.



TIP – Shop For A Variable-Speed Pump: In California these are required by law. Basically, these run just like a normal pump, but shift-down to a lower speed for cleaning and circulation purposes. Like most of the best energy-saving devices, these cost a little more than their conventional and inefficient ancestors, but you are guaranteed to make the difference up tenfold in a year’s worth of pool-heating costs.

TIP – Dress The Part: Have you considered how your clothing choices affect your power usage? The bottom line is that if you aren’t dressed appropriately for either the indoor or outdoor climate in which you find yourself at work or play, you are wasting energy in one way or another.
When driving or at the office, if you’re not dressed warmly enough you’ll be tempted to turn up the heat. If you’re overdressed, not only will you be generating more dirty laundry than necessary, but you may have to open a window in colder months to be comfortable, allowing the inside heat to escape and go to waste. So reach for a sweater or a pair of shorts… not the thermostat!
TIP – Power4Body: Did you know that statistically-speaking people mostly use their cars to travel distances of five miles, or less?!? Get out your bike and use it when weather permits. Or walk! You’ll not only be saving energy by not using your car, but you’ll be charging your body with some real electrolytic power! People who do this regularly discover that they havemore energy for work and play, not less. They are also far-less likely to become ill or overweight (and how this helps keep money in your pocket should be obvious)!
