My Experience as a Summer Intern at ENERGY STAR

For many college students summer is a time to take a well-deserved break from all-nighters, term papers and exam week stress, to go out and find something they are interested in. And if they are lucky, they may find something they could be passionate about as a career. I am a college student in my sophomore year at the University of Maryland, College Park studying Environmental Policy and Spanish. I am fortunate enough to really love my major, but I also know that I am not alone in that I am still unclear of how I want my education to translate in to my life post-grad. So, like most others in my position, I decided to take on an internship for the summer in hopes of learning about the many different roles and professions in the environmental sector that I might find appealing.
Yohana MerhoAfter several applications and emails I landed a sweet internship at ENERGY STAR. On my first day I was shown to my personal cubicle with my very own computer, phone and email. This whole ‘taking a sneak peak of the work force’ thing was beginning to feel a little like a reality now! Before I knew it I was going to meetings, working on assignments, doing research and feeling completely immersed in the ENERGY STAR work-culture.
One of my first and most interesting assignments was to prepare for a Congressional Expo that ENERGY STAR was to participate in. We were celebrating our 20th anniversary and my job was to make sure that our signs and posters reflected that through our statistics and general language. Soon after, I was told I was to work at the booth the day of the Expo, talking to other environmentalists about energy efficiency and other environmental issues. I was nervous, but very excited. I got to meet a lot of people, all working to better the environment through their individual professions, and I learned a lot from them.
My entire experience at ENERGY STAR has been a great learning experience. It was interesting to see and be a part of an entire office working independently as well as collectively to make a real difference in the fight against climate change. I had a chance to talk with several employees about their background and how they got to where they are now. I can say that I got exactly what I was hoping to get out of interning at EPA and much more. Who knows, maybe after I graduate I can help ENERGY STAR celebrate its 25th anniversary.

An ENERGY STAR qualified solar water heating system can cut your annual hot water costs in half, and is generally designed for use with an electric or gas back-up water heater. These systems can substantially reduce your carbon footprint. Your first step is to determine if your house is suitable for a solar water heater. For maximum results, your roof should:
  • Receive direct sunlight between the hours of 10 AM
    and 4 PM year round;
  • Face south (within 15°); and
  • Be sturdy with the shingles in good condition.
You will then want to contact a local solar water heater contractor, who can assess your site, provide recommendations, install a system and then perform periodic maintenance.
New Jersey's Clean Energy Program provides a list of approved solar water heater contractors. These contractors have been approved to participate in the program and have met several technical training requirements as well as completed the Contractor Application for Participation.

If you think back to the refrigerator that your family had in your childhood, it probably looked a lot different than the one in your home today. Think back to the refrigerator that your grandparents had, and the difference is probably as stark as night and day. With the image of those old refrigerators in mind, our companies, NSTAR and National Grid, recently teamed up on a unique event to encourage Massachusetts residents to recycle old, second refrigerators and freezers.
In a first for the City of Boston, we joined forces to present a vintage refrigerator “Pop-Up Museum,” in Dewey Square Park – a “cool” mobile display that featured retro refrigerators and freezers. Our museum enticed visitors to reminisce about the fridges they recall from childhood—or remember from old family photos and retro TV shows—and provided facts about the amount of energy these old appliances consume and how much they cost to operate. The fact is, older units can use as much as four times more electricity than newer, more efficient models.
In addition to the refrigerator display, we drew in hundreds of people with an on-site radio presence from WZLX 100.7, an educational booth which provided our customers giveaways and program information, and a fun scavenger hunt. Visitors were challenged to track down the answers to trivia questions about the vintage fridges on display. Winners were then drawn randomly to receive prizes including $50 home improvement gift cards.
Many people do not know that operating an outdated fridge or freezer comes with a steep price tag, and these devices can also leak toxins when dumped in landfills. This recycling program is a great opportunity for customers to save space, save money and help save the environment.
National appliance recycler, JACO Environmental, picks up old, second refrigerators and freezers free of charge at participants’ homes. The outdated appliances are sent to a de-manufacturing facility, where toxins such as mercury and oils that can poison the environment are safely extracted. During the process, JACO converts 95 percent of each appliance into recyclable metals, glass and plastics.
For those of us at NSTAR and National Grid, this program is perfect for anyone looking to reduce their household energy costs. Just unplugging an outdated refrigerator saves money. Combine that with a $50 reward and free pickup, and the benefits outweigh the convenience of having extra cold storage. We hope that by bringing this tangible display to consumers and showing them how to reduce costs while saving energy, they will be inspired to participate in the program.

This appliance recycling program is offered to Massachusetts residential electric customers of NSTAR, National Grid, Western Massachusetts Electric Co., Unitil and Cape Light Compact. New Delhi: Barely a week after it raised $500 million through foreign currency bonds, NTPC is planning to revisit overseas markets for more funds. The country’s largest power producer may raise another $700 million between January and June 2013, say sources familiar with the development.
The proposed issuance will be NTPC’s fourth offering under its $2-billion medium-term-note (MTN) programme, launched in 2006. “We are going to raise money soon. We will continue to tap overseas markets,” said Arup Roy Choudhury, chairman and managing director, without elaborating on the details.
Higher domestic borrowing costs and the recent reduction in withholding tax rate on infrastructure companies’ external commercial borrowings (ECB) are encouraging firms to scout overseas markets for funds.

NTPC became the first company to benefit from lower withholding tax when it raised funds last week through dollar-denominated senior unsecured 10-year bonds. The offer was subscribed eight times, which allowed the firm to price the bond at 305 basis points above the US Treasury (UST), cheaper than its initial guidance of 325 basis points above the UST.
The bond had a coupon at 4.75 per cent, the lowest coupon ever achieved by the company for its international bonds.
“The high withholding tax rate was making issuances very expensive; the reduction (in withholding tax rate) is a welcome change, although it has been restricted to only those having the status of infrastructure companies. The reduction in the effective rate of withholding tax from 26.7 per cent to 5.25 per cent will encourage a number of infrastructure companies to exploit fund raising opportunities overseas,” said Syed Zafar, managing director for capital markets and treasury solutions at Deutsche Bank in India.
The foreign lender was one of the merchant bankers to NTPC’s bond issue in September 2012. “A number of public sector companies that have necessary investment grades have expressed interest to raise funds from the overseas markets, but we will also get to see high yield issuers out of India accessing the offshore bond market,” said Zafar.
NTPC plans to use the funds in financing their capital expenditure. “During the 12th Five Year Plan period, our total capital expenditure plan is Rs 2.19 lakh crore. Out of this, Rs 1.5 lakh crore will be raised from the markets. Hence, we need to approach overseas investors to meet our funding requirements,” said NTPC’s Choudhury.
According to a senior official at NTPC, currently 18 projects with 15,000 Mw capacity are under construction and the money will be used to finance these ventures.
However, sources said a sharp decrease in domestic lending rates in coming months may persuade NTPC to delay its proposed overseas bond issue by a few months. “It will depend on whether the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decides to cut rate in October.
If (domestic) lending rates come down sharply, then the issue may happen in the second half of the next calendar year,” said a source.

9 Ways to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient


The house is a system. You save money and improve performance when you take cost-effective measures that reduce building loads, and then install systems and appliances that are the right size to meet the reduced loads. In general, over-sizing worsens performance and increases costs.
The most effective strategy for improving household energy efficiency is to first target your home’s envelope—walls, attic, windows, and doors. Then improve the energy efficiency of systems, such as heating, cooling, lighting, and appliances. Finally, consider clean energy generation (solar, geothermal, and so on).

Make sure your walls and attic are well insulated.

Effective insulation slows the rate that heat flows out of the house in winter or into the house in summer, so less energy is required to heat or cool the house. If your house has no wall insulation, and it has more-or-less continuous wall cavities (such as conventional stud walls), blown-in insulation can greatly improve your comfort and save enough energy to be very cost-effective. (It rarely pays to blow additional insulation into already insulated walls.) If your attic is unfinished, it often pays to upgrade its insulation.

Your contractor’s expertise is more important than the insulation material you choose. Properly installed fiberglass, cellulose, and most foam insulation materials can all reduce the heat conduction of the completed wall system. The key is “properly installed.” Ideally, the contractor will use an infrared camera during or after installation to look for voids.

Upgrade or replace windows.

If your windows are old and leaky, it may be time to replace them with energy-efficient models or boost their efficiency with weatherstripping and storm windows. It is almost never cost-effective to replace windows just to save energy. According to EnergyStar.gov, replacing windows will save 7 to 24 percent of your heating and air-conditioning bills, but the larger savings would be associated with replacing single-glazed windows. However, if you are replacing windows for other reasons anyway, in many areas the additional cost of Energy Star–rated replacement windows is very modest, perhaps $15 per window. This upgrade would be cost-effective—and increase your comfort to boot.

Plant shade trees and shrubs around your house.

If your house is older, with relatively poor insulation and windows, good landscaping (particularly deciduous trees) can save energy, especially if planted on the house’s west side. In summer, the foliage blocks infrared radiation that would warm the house, while in winter the bare branches let this radiation come through. Of course, if your house has very good insulation and Energy Star or better windows, the effect is much, much smaller because the building shell itself is already blocking almost all the heat gain.

Replace an older furnace with a high-efficiency system.

If your furnace was built before 1992 and has a standing pilot, it probably wastes 35 percent of the fuel it uses, and it is probably near the end of its service life. In this case, in all but the warmest climates, ACEEE recommends early replacement with acondensing furnace with annual efficiency of at least 90 percent. This type of furnace wastes no more than 10 percent of the natural gas you buy, and may save you as much as 27 percent on your heating bill.
If your furnace was installed after 1991, it probably has an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating of 80 percent, so the savings from replacement is smaller, but would be at least 11 percent if the unit is working perfectly. Your heating service technician or energy auditor may be able to help you determine the AFUE of your present system.
For houses with boilers and hot-water heat distribution (radiators, baseboard), the savings from a modern condensing boiler with outdoor reset or equivalent feedback controls can be substantially larger, since the condensing boilers allow reducing the circulating loop temperature almost all the time.

Improve the efficiency of your hot water system.

First, turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F). Second, insulate your hot water lines so they don’t cool off as quickly between uses. Third, use low-flow fixtures for showers and baths. While storage water heater standards were raised in 2001, it was probably not enough to justify throwing out an existing water heater that is working well.
Advanced contractors are now installing “on demand” hot water circulating loops that use a small pump to accelerate delivery of hot water to remote fixtures, which works great with low-flow fixtures. These are activated when users turn on a bathroom or kitchen tap, and turn off when hot water reaches the fixture. In ACEEE’s opinion, a continuous recirculating “hotel” loop wastes enormous amounts of water-heating energy, not to mention the electricity used for pumping.

Replace incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

CFLs can save three-quarters of the electricity used by incandescents. Most people don’t think about the fact that the electricity to run a lightbulb costs much more than the bulb itself. One of the new CFLs costs about two or three dollars, but it lasts 10,000 hours and uses only about 27 watts to generate as much light as a 100-watt incandescent bulb. During its life, it uses about $22 in electricity, so the total cost is about $25. A 100-watt incandescent bulb costs 50 cents, but lasts 1,000 hours so you need 10 of them ($5 to buy) to last 10,000 hours. In those 10,000 hours you will use 1,000 kilowatts of electricity, which will cost more than $80 at a national average price. So the lighting cost of the CFL is less than one-third of the cost for the incandescent. The best targets for replacement are 60- to 100-watt bulbs used several hours a day, because usage affects how long it takes to recover the investment.

If you buy a new refrigerator, don’t leave the old one plugged in.

Avoid the temptation to use the old fridge as a backup for party supplies and liquid refreshment. The extra storage space will cost you: figure an extra $50–150 per year in electricity to keep that older fridge running. In contrast, the new fridge, particularly if Energy Star rated, may cost only $30–60 per year to run because refrigerator efficiency has improved so much in the past three decades. Under these circumstances, think about how much refrigeration you really need. The best rule is to have only one refrigerator, and to size it to meet your real needs. That allows the luxury of ice-makers and similar conveniences with a clear conscience.
Also consider configuration. A similarly sized refrigerator with a top-mount freezer will use 20 to 25 percent less energy than a side-by-side model and often offers more usable refrigerator and freezer space.

Take advantage of new tax incentives to improve your home.

Federal tax incentives are available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Energy efficiency incentives for upgrades to existing homes have been extended, and are now available for 2009 and 2010. These incentives now cover up to $1,500 (from $500), based on 30 percent of the cost of the improvement. Improvements can include building-envelope improvements (windows, insulation) and heating/air-conditioning upgrades. There are also 30-percent credits, without a cap, for on-site renewables (solar photovoltaic and solar hot-water systems, small wind systems, and geothermal heat pumps).

Schedule an energy audit for more expert advice on your home as a whole.

Energy auditors and raters use specialized tools and skills to evaluate your home and recommend the most cost-effective measures to improve its comfort and efficiency, as well as the best sequence for doing them to take advantage of interactions. The rater can also provide independent verification of contractors’ work quality. Look for raters who are RESNET Accredited. In some regions, there are Home Performance with Energy Star programs, too. Most of these programs include low-cost home assessment and strong quality assurance practices and/or inspections.

- Inexpensive. No cost wasted on gas!!
- Better for the lawn. If used regularly the scissor-like cut of the reel mower is actually healthier for your lawn.
- It better for your health. Not only are you pushing the reel mower for exercise, you won’t be inhaling toxic fumes like you were with the gas powered mower.
Cons:
- Has trouble cutting tall grass and weeds.
- Not good for large lawns, or pushing for long periods of time.
Push Reel Mowers may not be the best choice for everyone. It really depends on the size of your lawn and the type of grass you have. Organic Vegetable Garden

In this video I’m going to give you a quick tour of my backyard and show you my beautiful vegetable garden. If you already have a garden that’s fantastic, if you don’t it’s not too late to plant something this year.http://auditorlink.blogspot.in/
For some people it may seem like too much work, but I love getting my hands dirty and spending time with my family. My kids love learning about natures and helping out. Plus, I can’t tell you have much money we save on produce each year.
Now as you can see, I have a really big garden. Now you don’t need a garden this big to see some benefits. I mean if I could send you one of my mouth watering tomatoes when they’re ready, you’d never go back to the unripe, tasteless grocery store fruits and vegetables. On top of great tasting produce, growing your own food means that you’re helping the planet too. Most food we get today is grown very far away. Many times it comes from another country. This transportation requires huge amounts of fossil fuels which heavily pollutes the environment.
One more thing, if you do plan to grow a garden, I highly recommend planting an organic garden. Here are a few reasons why:
• You won’t have to handle dangerous chemicals that are harmful to your health
• Organically grown foods taste much better
• Organically grown foods are much higher in nutrients
• They’re not genetically modified, who really knows what this does to our food
• Using natural methods is much better for the environment

If you’re like me, you have a dozen or so bills you have to pay each and every month. But have you ever wondered how much paper and energy is wasted printing and mailing those bills?
When I first heard this number I was shocked. Over 63 Billion bills were mailed out in 2008 in the United States alone. Each one of these was printed, folded, stuffed into an envelope, delivered to the post office, then delivered to your home and ultimately, thrown in the garbage. Think of all the wasted electricity, gas and natural resources used just to send you your bill.
Well if you haven’t already been using it, I want to welcome you to the world of e-billing. E-bills work the same as regular bills except instead of getting them in the mail, you conveniently get them delivered to your computer as an email. Now I know some of you are already doing this, so to you I say congratulations. To everyone else, it’s simple to switch and here’s how.
1. Make a list of all the bills that you pay monthly. A simple way to do this is to collect your bills for a few months and mark down the ones you still receive by mail.
2. Next call each company that is sending you bills and ask them if they offer electronic billing. If they don’t, encourage them to start doing so. Not only will they help save the environment, they’ll be saving money too. While you’re on the phone with them, ask them what information you’ll need to make the payment electronically through your bank.
3. Lastly, contact you bank and ask them to setup your bill payment in your bank account so you won’t have to re-enter the information each and every month.
And that’s it. And once you’re setup, you’ll just have to check your email for bills and pay them online. Not only are you saving the environment, but your also saving time by not having to travel to the bank to pay your bills.
Now a lot of people ask me if this is safe. I was a little worried when I first got started too, but rest assured many banks offer great protection in the event something was to go wrong. I personally think it’s a lot safer. We’ve all heard stories of identity theft. These criminals actually go through people’s garbage to find bills to steal your personal information. By using eBills, you won’t have to worry about this anymore. Try switching to online billing and let me know what you think in the blog section.

Saving Water

Have you ever wondered how much water is being wasted in your home? Gallons of water are being poured down the drain daily, just by taking a shower, running the faucet and watering the lawn. Well, today I’m going to give you some water saving tips to help reduce the water use in your home.
1. Turn off your taps:
Turning water taps off while doing daily chores helps save wasted water. For example:
• Brushing your teeth without the water running can save 25 gallons a month.
• When washing your hands, turn off the tap until you’re lathered up and ready to rinse.
• Same with shaving, turning the water off until you need to rinse, this can save another 300 gallons a month.
• If you wash dishes by hand, fill one sink with soapy water and wait until all dishes have been scrubbed and soaped, then rinse all at the same time.
2. Save used water:
Don’t dump used water down the drain, save it. Use a pan to wash your fruits and vegetable instead of washing them under running water. Save the water and use it to water your household plants or garden. Same with the water from your cooked vegetables, give the nutrients to your plants, or save it for a nutritious soup for yourself.
3. Reduce water use on your lawn:
Most water waste is from unattended sprinklers or water systems on your lawn. Always make sure you adjust your sprinklers so only your lawn is getting watered, not the sidewalk, driveway or street. Put your outdoor sprinklers on a timer, or set your kitchen timer while you are inside, so you won’t forget the sprinklers are on. Also before watering, use a spade or trowel to check the root of your lawn or garden for moisture. If there is still moisture two inches under the soil surface, you don’t need to water.
4. Install low flow water fixtures:
The average US family uses 127,000 gallons of water a year; by switching to low flow fixtures around your home you can drastically reduce that number. In past videos, I’ve shown you how to install a low flow showerhead, but think of all the other taps in your home.
A few easy 5 minute changes to your daily routines could save thousands of gallons of wasted water. If you have any more water saving tips, share them on the blog!
